Van Maele, Francis (Red Fox Press)

Francis Van Maele is a publisher and artist born in Belgium in 1947. In 1977 he began learning silk screen printing in the Art Academy of Trier, Germany and began producing his own books with photographs and silk screen prints. He founded Editions Phi, which became a leading publishing house in Luxembourg for poetry, theatre, literature, essays and art.

After founding Redfoxpress, a publisher of artist's books, Van Maele moved to Ireland eventually setting up a studio on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Since 2005 both Van Maele and his partner Antic-Ham have published limited edition artists' books and created zines, silkscreen prints, photographs and other ephemera. These works are small runs or limited editions, often hand crafted and all printed and bound in-house.

Van Maele has worked with artists from all over the world, publishing work and also collaborating with other artists to create unique and unusual pieces incorporating a variety of media and techniques.

Redfoxpress publications can be found in the collections of many international institutions including Tate Collection, London; Library of Congress, Washington DC; Centre Pompidou, Bibliothèque Kandinsky, Paris; Rijksmuseum, Netherlands; Picture Book Institute, Seoul and Gallery 360, Tokyo.
